Introduction

Some people find it difficult to distinguish between acronyms and abbreviations. An acronym is a type of Abbreviation. But it should not be mistaken for abbreviations. Both terms are ways of shortening.

The clear and accurate difference between acronyms and abbreviations is that acronyms can be pronounced while abbreviations cannot be pronounced.

Definition of acronym

According to Wikipedia, Acronyms are words or names formed from the initial component of longer names or phrase using the first letter. Acronyms are words formed from the first letter of other words. They are usually pronounced as full words.

Examples of Acronym

Below are examples of Acronym
AIDS – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. He tested positive for AIDS.
ASAP – As Soon As Possible. We have to get to the hospital ASAP!
AWOL – Absent Without Official Leave (or Absent Without Leave). I don’t know where he went. He’s totally AWOL.
IMAX – Image Maximum. We saw MI:6 in the local IMAX theatre.
LASER – Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Our cat loves to chase a little red LASER beam.
