Cover letter Example

No doubt writing cover letters can be boring and very uncomfortable, but it gives that sense of hard work and dedicated involvement as if you were on the job already; eyes scrolling job listings, filtering your possibilities through those abilities you are about detailing on that cover letter.

Any job seeker will support your testimony on such pre-employed experience of hard work. Ha-ha! But following some guidelines while keeping to the boundaries of flexibility can affect your hard work and make those boring moments productive by granting you a chance at an interview, after which you will need my good luck. Winks!

The challenge in writing cover letters is that it has to be the strength of your curriculum vitae (CV)- such a grand introduction to your CV but with more detailed tiles than your CV.

Achieving such requires a level of dexterity and preparedness in Writing and research which you may almost consider to be a just-discovered skill.

Your cover letter could support your CV or ruin it entirely because the cover letter is usually the first document reviewed by your employer.

Imagine being an employer. Would you want to throw up upon seeing disjointed thoughts when going through a cover letter with a cup of coffee or be hypnotized by grammatical errors in that bulky cover letter? We here at example.ng have listed some guidelines and examples to effective cover letter writing, beginning with addressing common errors as seen in today’s cover letter. As you should know by now, the fun in a cover letter is in it’s reading.

COMMON MISTAKES IN COVER LETTER WRITING

  • Blind writing: this is no time to rely on basic intuition, not time to improvise without knowing what you are signing up for because relying on your luck card would earn you some rejection. Research on the company you are sending your applications to and get acquainted with important details as address, job description; make sure to make the name of the company a keyword in your cover letter; write it repeatedly; this shows how acquainted you are with the subject.
  • Invoking Cliches and old Hitler’s ghost: greetings like “dear sir or madam” is too conventional and sound threatening, like history’s “hey Hitler’s“ salutation. Your employer expects to see such innovation and creativity in your cover letter now as when you are offered that employment; remember, you need your employer alive to grant you that possible employment, don’t kill him with boredom or a surprise attack- c’mon, surprise me! Use gender-neutral addresses such as “ Dear Human Resource Manager or Dear hiring manager” if unsure of your reader- gender and title. Also, remember, females are better addressed as “Ms.” Rather than “Mrs”.
  • The “my name is” syndrome: your name should be written as a closure on your cover letter, should be the heading on your CV and somewhere on a different document. Try starting your cover letter with your qualifications or that position you are applying for.
  • Submitting a snippet for a cover letter: I’m sure you can fill your diary describing just your emotions (that little nonphysical part of you) to that man or lady you are interested in as you are interested in this job, the idea of a cover letter is to describe you, list your skills and tell me why you are the best man for the job; tell me how you can be productive with your skills to sustain our marriage (agreement) but in a less romantic way.
  • Submitting the next Oxford dictionary edition as a cover letter: yes, I know what I said earlier- ‘not too short’, but it does not have to be too long either. Work on moderation, list your skills and avoid using unnecessary adjectives and self-exalting descriptions. A standard cover letter should not exceed a page. Be Precise and concise when writing a cover letter, there are other applicants as you with interesting cover letters and your employer looks forward to reading them without literally ‘sleeping on it’- be considerate and save your employer from that lazy reply.
  • Curriculum vitae vol II: you ever paid money to see a movie twice? That feeling is similar to reading two documents saying the same thing. Your cover letter should mostly describe your work experiences and not a retest of that comprehension you failed in high school.

Now we have got that out of our system, consider the following when writing your cover letter:

  • Show interest and great enthusiasm in the position you are applying for.
  • Include only relevant information; no employer is interested in your boring hobbies, rather, include your values and how they align with the company’s work culture and core values.
  • Focus more on your abilities and not your educational history and certifications.
  • Work on your formats. Use bullet points in listings; let your points breathe- split them into paragraphs.
  • Proofread your cover letter and make the necessary corrections.
