PUBLIC HOLIDAYS OBSERVED IN NIGERIA

The following is a list of National Holidays celebrated in Nigeria; where you might find any missing or a misplaced dated, please leave a comment in the comment section below.

These holidays are grouped into:

  • Religion
  • General holiday
  • Reference to great personalities as stated by the government.

RELIGION

Nigeria is a multicultural country dominated by different tribes and religions.

Although, the significant sorts of religion in Nigeria include:

  • Christianity.
  • Islamic
  • Traditional religions.

The followers of these religions have the days they observe for celebration, hence public holidays.

CHRISTIANITY

It is important to note that Religious holidays have been subject to study and personal knowledge as many people don’t agree with the said dates, with Christianity being the most diverse of all religions. Such dates have been said to be of pagan origin but here’s what the World or Nation thinks… It’s time for some roasted chicken and special buffets!

  • CHRISTMAS EVE

It is observed in anticipation of Christmas day. It is otherwise called Christmas evening/ Christmas vigil.

It happens every December 24th

  • CHRISTMAS DAY

This day is not just National but a global holiday as many Christians all over the world believe Jesus to have been born on December 25, hence the holiday Christmas.

  • EASTER

It is known as Pascha (Greek word for Easter). It is the second principal festival celebrated by Christians. The day praises the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after His crucifixion.

Some Christians accept that Jesus paid for the transgression of the human through his crucifixion and the ideal way to appreciate this is to celebrate this day a Religious holiday.

Easter is observed each first Sunday after the full moon or after the spring equinox

However, Easter falls on a different date each year.

GOOD FRIDAY

Good Friday precedes Easter. It is used in remembering the crucifixion of Jesus and his demise at Calvary.

On this day celebration is done in Churches to pay their respects.

It’s more of a sorrowful day.

ISLAMIC

  • EID EL KABIR

It is quite possibly the main occasion for Muslims. Another name for this celebration is “Eid al Adha,” which means “Feast of the Sacrifice,”. It denotes the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice Ishmael on Mount Moriah- of course, according to the Koran.

There is no fixed date for it as Eid-el Kabir happens on the 10th day of Dhul Hajj, which is the twelfth month in the Muslim lunar calendar.

  • RAMADAN

The ninth month of the Muslim year, during which severe fasting is observed from daybreak to dusk.

  • EID UL FLTR

It highlights the end of Muslim Month of Fasting (Ramadan). There is consistently a celebratory supper on the night of this day. It is normally a three-day celebration where many attend early morning prayers, influencing participation.

  • AL-HAJIRA

It’s the Islamic New Year which marks the first day of the month of Muharram and also furthermore denotes the finish of Mohammad’s Journey from Mecca to Medina.

  • MAWLID

It is a public holiday where Muslims celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.

GENERAL HOLIDAY

These occasions are not limited to tribes, religions and so forth.

Everyone in the country generally observes them.

  • NEW YEAR

It happens each January one (1). It is the main day of the year where the schedule begins to tally by addition of one.

Individuals everywhere in the world praise this day by making fresh new goals, wishes, appreciation of the past year, attending church services, etc.

  • NEW YEAR’S EVE

It comes before the new year. It generally happens every December 31st. People celebrate it with happiness and appreciation through praying, eating dancing, fireworks as it marks the last day of the year.

Most Christians attend watch night services which some call crossover night.

  • WOMEN’S DAY

Well, the world will celebrate her woman if you wouldn’t yours.

This day pinpoints the critical rights of each lady.

It indicates a female presence’s necessity, accomplishments, significance, etc. It is more of gender parity, empowerment and avoidance of discrimination.

It is an annual celebration for every March 8.

  • WORKER’S DAY

It is otherwise called Mayday or Labour Day. It is a day off for every business owner, worker and student. It is celebrated in acknowledgement of their efforts and hard work. Often it is celebrated on May 1 but varies.

  • CHILDREN’S DAY

It differs across countries. However, Nigerians observe this day every May 27.

  • DEMOCRACY DAY

It is a national holiday to commemorate the rebirth of democracy in Nigeria. In 1999, the civilian government was elected, abolishing military rule, which has since been the longest since independence from colonial masters in 1960. It an annual tradition. June 12 was formerly a celebratory date in southwestern parts of Nigeria and Lagos, a day formerly known as Abiola day. Today June 12 stands a reminder revealing the proposed Democratic Nigerian government to be a Government of the people, by the people and for the people.

  • FATHER’S DAY

Father’s Day is a day to honour parenthood and fatherly bond, the impact of fathers and value of the male presence in the society.

It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

Most Father’s day celebrations fall on 21st June in Nigeria.

  • NATIONAL YOUTH DAY

This day was set up by President Muhammadu Buhari in the year 2020.

It is a day put aside to sort out and discover answers for issues that affect the youths of the country.

It is to be celebrated annually on the 1st of November.

  • NATIONAL DAY

It is also known as Independence Day.

It expresses Nigeria’s freedom from colonization. Heroes engaged in the Independence movement are remembered on this day.

It is celebrated every October 1st

  • BOXING DAY

It happens the second day following Christmas celebration. It is mainly known as a shopping holiday where individuals provide for the needy.

Boxing day is traditionally believed to be the day where special Christmas boxes where gifted and so it is more like an offering day.

It happens every 26th December.

  • VALENTINE’S DAY

It is a day utilized for the festival of love, affection and friendship. It is celebrated across all countries including Nigeria.

On this day, gifts and flowers are exchanged between loved ones.

This day can be traced back to a legend called Saint Valentine.

It is celebrated every February 14.

  • SAMBISA MEMORIAL DAY

It is celebrated mostly in Borno. It is a day off for the population there. Schools and businesses are shut down.

It is a day to remember the fallen soldiers and the individuals who gave their lives to a noble cause, to battle Boko Haram terrorists.

It is literally a grieving day for the victims of Boko Haram insurgents.

It is observed every December 22.
