Examples of Simile

What is a Simile?

A Simile is a figure of speech that compares things, places, humans etc with the use of “like” or “as”. Unlike metaphor that indirectly compares things by implying that something “is”, Simile, on the other hand, makes a direct comparison by saying that something on someone “is like” or “as”

Simile can be used in literature writing to show a direct comparison between human and nonhuman object, or in comedy which can be used to create humour through direct comparison. It is also a relevant tool which s used to add description, creativity and entertainment in language.

Simile can also be used to stress or accentuate certain characteristics, arouse related emotions a d also create new connections in the mind. This makes Simile a very strong tool for description rather than just the actual description or common use of adjectives.

When to use Simile

Although Simile is very relevant in writing as it compares and describes things, events etc, one should be able to discern when to and when not to use a smile. In instances where the literal language is required, the use of Simile is not necessary.

Let’s take for example in a safety manual, “all tools and machines should be handled with great care” would be more suitable than “all tools and machines should be treated like an egg”.

Using a simile in a sentence

It might be surprising that many find it hard to contrast a good Simile when writing, below are three tips on how to write a Simile.

• First think of who or what you want to write about, think of the quality you want to attribute to what you want to write or talk about. For example, you want to describe a beautiful lady.
• Next, think of the second thing that has the same or similar qualities you want to attribute to the first thing.
• Finally, link them up with “like” or “as”, by saying that the first thing is “like” the second thing, or that the first thing is “as”….”as” the second thing.
