2024 Scholarships – AERC-World Bank Visiting Scholars Program 2024

The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and The World Bank, Africa Region Chief Economist’s Office (AFRCE), have agreed to collaborate through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for mutual benefit. The AERC-World Bank visiting scholars programme, central to this partnership, has been established to support this collaboration.

The programme requires visiting scholars to work with the AFRCE team, attend AFRCE-led activities, benefit from capacity-building initiatives organized by AFRCE, interact with the World Bank’s researchers, and fully utilize the World Bank’s resources.

Scholars are expected to revise their draft papers and submit them to the World Bank Working Paper Series and a ranking Journal, present at least one seminar on their research, contribute meaningfully to the World Bank’s Africa Region ongoing research and analytical work, develop a repository of research interests, and comply with all other terms and conditions included in their terms of reference and applicable consultancy contract.

AERC has invited its network researchers and faculty to express their interest in participating in the AERC-World Bank visiting scholars program.

The fellowship programme will allow participants to spend time at the World Bank, work on their own research relevant to economic development in Africa, and collaborate with the World Bank’s researchers, particularly those in the Africa Region.

About African Economic Research Consortium (AERC)

In the late 1980s, a group of African scholars and Africanists realized that there was a gap between economic policy making and economic research in sub-Saharan Africa.

They noticed that research findings applicable in other economies were not always relevant to the African context. Even when relevant research was available, it was not always utilized effectively. This led to the launch of AERC.

Requirements For Program Qualification

• The requirement is that the individual should be a researcher affiliated with AERC, which includes those who are part of the AERC collaborative PhD programme (CPP).
• The applicant should have an ongoing AERC research project either at the interim/post-field stage or the final research paper stage.
• The research project should be relevant to the research priorities of the Africa Region of the World Bank and aligned with the needs for continuous development in Africa.

Required Documents For Application

• A brief document consisting of two pages expressing interest.
• A preliminary document discussing a topic relevant to the research priorities of the African region of the World Bank, as well as the challenges that must be addressed to promote development in Africa.
• If you are instructing a suitable course, you may want to enhance the curriculum and course materials during your visit to the World Bank.
• A version of your most recent resume.
