The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) Graduate-in-Training Program for 2026 is currently accepting applications. The goal of this program is to provide recent graduates with advanced, hands-on experience in the exciting field of radio astronomy and related scientific and engineering disciplines.
Through practical projects, systematic mentoring, and exposure to top-notch research and development activities, the program aims to close the gap between academic theory and professional application.
Starting on March 1, 2026, the Graduate-in-Training Program will continue for three years. The Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO), the Losberg Site in the Northern Cape, or the SARAO offices in Cape Town will be the principal locations for successful graduates.
Each site contributes to South Africa’s leadership in international radio astronomy by providing a unique setting for research, engineering, and technical development.
As part of the selection process, candidates who have been shortlisted for the program must finish an online assessment. This assessment helps match candidates with positions that complement their technical proficiency and educational background.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications:
- BEng or BScEng in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Civil Engineering
- BEng or BScEng in Computer Science, or a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science
- BEng or BTech in Civil Engineering
- MSc in Electronics, Radio Frequency, or Antenna Engineering
