Do you know that not everyone who graduates gets to serve during the NYSC? Yes, that’s true
The NYSC is a compulsory one-year program for Nigerian graduates under the age of 30. However, not everyone serves in this capacity. In NYSC, there are some cases where individuals are given a letter of exemption or exclusion from NYSC, depending on the circumstances.
Here, I will share who is eligible for the NYSC exemption, how to apply for it, and the difference between exclusion and exemption in the NYSC.
Who Is Eligible For the NYSC Exemption
There are reasons why some graduates are given an NYSC exemption letter, and they are certain criteria that persons meet before they can apply for exemption.
- Graduates who are over 30 years of age
NYSC is age sensitive, and it is one of the common reasons for exemption.
Nigerian and foreign-trained graduates who turn 30 years or older at the time of graduation are exempted from serving in the one-year service. However, if you graduated from the university before the age of 30, you will not be exempt from service.
According to the NYSC decree of 1993, once a person turns 30 years of age or older before graduation, they are automatically exempted from NYSC.
- Persons with disabilities
Graduates with disabilities are exempted from NYSC service, although they can still apply for other opportunities.
- People who studied using the part-time system
Persons who completed their studies using part-time or distance learning platforms get an exclusion letter from NYSC.
- Foreign-trained Nigerian graduates
Foreign-trained graduates can apply for the NYSC exemption. But will have to provide the required information and documents, which NYSC will evaluate.
How To Apply For NYSC Exemption
After graduation, you meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the NYSC exemption. Here are the steps for the application
- Online registration
The first step is the online registration
You need to visit the NYSC official website or the registration portal and create an account. You get to complete the registration form, where you will fill in your personal details, such as your name, date of birth, institution of study, and educational background.
- Upload and submit your document.
The next step is to upload the original copies of the documents required. And these documents include
- Birth certificate or age declaration
- Academic transcripts and certificates of graduation ( this is applicable to foreign graduates)
- Disability certificate (this is applicable to disabled persons )
After the application, you meet the exemption criteria. You will have to wait for NYSC to evaluate your application and approve it.
- Get the exemption certificate.
After the application has been processed and approved , the NYSC will issue an NYSC exemption certificate for such a candidate. To get a copy of it, you can print it directly from the NYSC website.
The Difference Between NYSC Exemption And Exclusion
These two terms are applicable to graduates; however, they are used and issued on different occasions and for different reasons.
The exemption from NYSC indicates that a candidate is not required to serve in the NYSC program as a result of issues like graduating at 30 years of age or older, having a disability, being a foreign-trained Nigerian graduate, or being a person in the military force. The certificate is proof that a person has officially been relieved from NYSC service.
Exclusion from NYSC occurs when a candidate is disqualified from serving as a result of issues like not meeting the NYSC eligibility criteria and submitting incorrect or false documents.
Here are some reasons for the NYSC exclusion
- Providing false or incorrect documents during registration
- Graduating from an unrecognised university
- Criminal cases or records
- Completed study through distance learning platforms, and the academic qualification does not meet the requirements of the NYSC.
Conclusion
Exemption and exclusion from the NYSC usually happen for certain reasons. However, understanding the causes for exemption or exclusion makes it easier to know where you stand as a Nigerian graduate.
I have shared the eligibility criteria, application process and differences between the NYSC exemption and exclusion to make the process easier for you. If you fall into any of the categories, follow the process involved and take the necessary steps.
