Jargon Definition

Jargon comprises specialized terminology understandable only to individuals within a specific group. Most words in the English language are part of the general, everyday lexicon, understood by almost anyone who speaks the language. However, jargon is a form of shorthand exclusive to particular groups, utilizing words that lack meaning outside their specific context.Although this language is valuable or essential for group members, it typically holds no significance for those outside the group. Certain professions possess such an abundance of jargon that it has earned a unique name.

1. Medical Jargon

Within the medical domain, one can encounter enigmatic jargon encompassing many scientific terms and abbreviations specific to the field.
  1. Acute – An abrupt onset of a condition.
  2. Agonal – A term used to indicate a significant and unfavourable deterioration in a patient’s condition.
  3. Atypical – Something that deviates from the norm or is not entirely typical.
  4. Comorbid – The simultaneous occurrence of two or more conditions.
  5. Iatrogenic – something that didn’t go as planned
  6. idiopathic – a condition that does not clearly explain the cause
  7. of metabolic syndrome – A collection of risk factors that elevate the chances of experiencing a heart attack or stroke.
  8. Negative – Test results that indicate the absence of the condition being tested.

2. Business Jargon

The business realm is well acquainted with its lexicon, consisting of industry-specific jargon. It takes only a brief moment on Wall Street to encounter the usage of these terms, as they are commonly employed in discussions and transactions.
  1. Bang for the buck – A term that signifies maximizing the value or benefits obtained in exchange for money spent.
  2. Best practice – the perfect term to carry out something
  3. core competency – The fundamental power or resilience of a group or company.
  4. Due diligence – putting effort into research before making a business decision
  5. drill down – To examine a problem meticulously or closely.
  6. Low-hanging fruit – the easiest problems to fix
  7. scalable – An undertaking with the potential for expansion with the minimal additional investment required.
  8. sweat equity – getting a stake in the business instead of paying
  9. the 9-to-5 – business jargon meaning a standard workday
  10. chief cook and bottle-washer – a person who holds many responsibilities

3. Police Jargon

Additionally, the police force possesses jargon, encompassing terminology specific to their profession.

  1. 10-4 – radio jargon meaning, “Okay” or “I understand.”
  2. Assumed room temperature – An individual has passed away.
  3. Beat – The designated area for which an officer oversees parole matters.
  4. Berries and cherries – the lights on top of a police car
  5. Code eight-term means the officer needs help immediately
  6. Code eleven – a code that means the individual is at the scene of the crime
  7. Mirandize – To inform someone of their legal rights.
  8. Sam Browne – a police belt
  9. Suspect – a person whom the police think may have committed a crime
  10. Wolf pack – A convoy of patrol cars moving together.

3. Workplace jargon

In numerous workplaces, it is common to utilize jargon that describes various aspects of the office environment and specific business practices. This shared language helps facilitate communication and understanding among colleagues within the office setting.

How To Use Jargon

Using jargon is most effective when communicating with individuals with the same background and knowledge within a specific group. However, it is unwise to employ jargon when interacting with people who are unfamiliar with your field. By doing so, communication can flow smoothly and effectively.

Writing and speaking facilitate communication, and using words that only a few understand can hinder your message’s clarity. It is important to consider your audience first and foremost, ensuring you choose the appropriate words to convey your ideas accurately.
