Melchizedek -The Indisputable Identity of Melchizedek Revealed

Everything with a beginning always has an end. But this doesn’t apply to most biblical characters, as God being the main point of all theological fabric, pioneered a “beginning without an end” possessing an existence that challenges the knowledge of all Christians and non-Christians as to how possible it was to exist without any origin and to last without a limit.

But the matter currently at hand isn’t centered on giving a definitive to the existing complexity of God, it is rather based on a follow-up character who once subsisted on earth. unlike any other human, his personality was concealed with anonymity, and just like God, he was devoid of an origin.

In the old testament, he was a figure of great importance because his presence was recognized as one of both a priest and king, he had a connection with Jerusalem and was revered by Abraham, who paid a tithe to him after he (Abraham) returned from battling a coalition of Mesopotamian kings under Chedorlaomer to rescue lot his kidnapped nephew. He (Melchizedek) made an appearance as an individual only in an intercalate vignette (Gen 14:18-20),

in the episode he had an encounter with Abraham after he returned from battle, he gives Abraham bread and wine (which has become the interpretation by some Christian scholars as a precursor of the Eucharist, so that Melchizedek’s name entered the canon of the Roman mass), and hallows him in the name of God the most high ( “El “Elyon). In return, Abraham gives him a tithe, ten percent of his spoils.

Now the name Melchizedek has an origin from Canaan which has been translated into “My King is Sedek” or “My King Is Righteousness”. Sharing a similarity with the Hebrew cognate he is said to be the king of Salem, Which is Jerusalem.

The book of psalm 76:2 identifies Salem in a way that portrays her as synonymous with Jerusalem, the book of Gen 14:17 addresses it as “the king’s valley” having an existing relationship with what was said in the psalms this has further confirmed that identity. The god whom Melchizedek served as a priest is “El ‘Elyon”, a name birthed in Canaan and probably a designation of the high god of their pantheon.

For Abraham to recognize the authority and authenticity of the Canaanite priest it is quite startling although it has no parallel in biblical literature. The story revolving around the history of Melchizedek came to a final conclusion in the era of King David and served as an apologia for David making Jerusalem his headquarter and constructing a lineage of priesthood there.

Abraham’s paying of tribute to a Jerusalem priest-king was what initiated the bringing in of tithes by his descendants to the priests of Jerusalem ministering at the sanctum at king David’s capital.

The story may also possess relation with the conflict between the Levite priests who descended from Abraham and the Zadokite priests of Jerusalem, who later changed their allegiance to Yahweh, the Hebrew god. The zadokites monopolized the Jerusalem priesthood until forcibly taken into captivity in Babylon, at which time the Levite priests asserted their own hegemony. the Melchizedek episode could reveal their ascendancy of Zadokite power.

The biblical account also posses textual issues. Abraham paying a tithe to Melchizedek is an interpretation, though a likely one, of the original biblical text, in which the matter is obscure, it seems conflicting that Abraham gives a tenth percent of the plunder to Melchizedek and then refuses to take any of it for himself ( verse 22-23). Again, some biblical scholars have gone as far as asserting that it would be very unusual for an author of the Davidic era to construct a narrative with a Canaanite protagonist.

In Psalm 110, it makes reference to a future messiah from the Davidic linage, it refers to the priest-king Melchizedek as a prototype of this Messiah. This allusion led the author of the letter to the Hebrews in the New Testament to interpret the name Melchizedek as “king of righteousness” and Salem as a place of peace so that Melchizedek is made a foreshadower to Christ who is stated to be the true kind of righteousness and peace ( Heb. 7:2).

In accordance with the affinity, the same way Abraham the ancestors of the Levites. Paid tithes to Melchizedek and was therefore inferior to him, it’s the same way the Melchizedek-like priesthood of Christ is superior to that of the Levites and the same way the old testament assigns no birth or death date to Melchizedek, simply laid an emphasis on the external priesthood of Christ.
