Monkey pox cases spikes in Edo state

The Edo State Ministry of Health has revealed that About eight persons have tested positive for Monkey pox in the Edo, this was revealed by the Edo State Ministry of Health and has urged citizens to observe safety precautions to curb the spread of the deadly virus and other contagious diseases in the state.

Prof. Akoria Obehi, the state Commissioner for Health, revealed this to journalists in Benin City, stated that the Ministry of Health has upgraded surveillance and other activities to reduce the spread of the contagious disease.

The state commissioner, however, stated that all individuals who were diagnosed with the infectious disease have recovered.

Prof. Akoria Obehi also noted, “Despite the increase in the number of definite cases of Monkey pox in Edo, it has become vital to caution the public on the health dangers that the virus poses and repeat the need for residents of the state to be cautious and take heed to safety measures.”

The Commissioner of Health also listed the symptoms of Monkey pox to include, headache, sore throat, weakness of the body, fever, and broadening of the glands under the jaw and in the neck.

“It can also come with the form of a rash on the palms face, genitals, soles of the feet and other vital parts of the body, which can appear as solid or fluid-filled at the start and can be evident within a period of about two to three weeks after infection, depending on the health condition of the infected individual.”

While addressing on various measures to curb the disease, she noted, “The virus can be transmitted from an infected animals and rodents such as mice rats, squirrels, and even from monkeys; and also through contact with infected spots, body fluids, blood, blisters or scabs, and sharing of any objects.”

Prof Akoria recommended “Please If you suspect any sign or symptoms of Monkey pox, kindly visit the nearest health facility for medical attention in your area or call the interim State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (0806 059 3802).”
