It is important to note that there are no married men in the NYSC, and as such, only provisions for married women are made.  Here I will share with you the best guide for married women going for the NYSC.

The aim of the NYSC program is to build a united and integrated Nigeria. This is why graduates are assigned to states different from their own to learn a new language, contribute to national development, and so on.

However, married women are given special consideration as a result of the needs they have.  Such as staying close to their spouse and taking care of their children.

Married women going for NYSC are granted the privilege of deployment to their husbands’ state of residence. NYSC requires additional documents from married women to confirm their marriage and their husbands’ place of residence.

Here I will list and explain the  documents which married women going for NYSC are to  scan and upload during online registration. Which will further be checked and approved by management.

NYSC Requirements For Married Women

When registering online for NYSC, as a married woman, you will be asked to select your gender. Once you select female, options about marital status will pop up. Once you select married, the required document will pop up. These documents are to be clearly scanned before uploading.

Here is a list of the documents NYSC requires married female prospective corps members to provide.  They include the following.

  1. Marriage Certificate
  2. Domicile Letter
  3. Husband ID Card
  4. Utility Bill
  5. Newspaper Publication

Now let’s get to know about these NYSC requirements for married women and the benefits that come with them.

  1. Marriage Certificate

A marriage certificate is a legal document that certifies the union between two individuals. This document is non-negotiable for married prospective corps members during online registration. They are required to scan and upload a copy of their marriage certificate as proof of their marriage.

  1. Domicile Letter

A domicile letter is a document issued by the local government or a higher authority in a state. The document confirms a person’s legal residence in a specific area. Married female prospective corps members are required to upload a valid domicile letter, indicating the exact location of their husbands’ residence and the period they have resided in the area.

  1. Husband ID Card

Married prospective corps members are to upload a valid identification card of their husbands, displaying the husband’s full name and photo. This document can either be a national ID card, a voter’s card, a driver’s license, or a passport.

  1. Utility Bill

This document is also another way of verifying the husband’s residence. The utility bill must bear the husband’s name and residence. The utility bill can be an electricity bill, water bill, phone bill, rent receipt, or any other proof of address.

A letter of employment from the husband’s employer stating his position and location can serve this purpose, too.

  1. Newspaper Publication

Initially, NYSC required married women to show a newspaper publication confirming their name change after marriage. However, in 2024, a memo was released stating that it is no longer needed.

But in most cases, it is still requested. To be safe, it is best to get everything ready.

Who Can Be Exempted From the NYSC Camp?

The NYSC camp exemption is applicable to pregnant and nursing mothers. The exemption is to ensure the well-being of both mother and child. Female prospective corps members in this category will not be accommodated in the camp.

Pregnant and nursing mothers will register at the camp and then return home to continue with their primary place of assignment after the three-week orientation course.

Conclusion

Serving one’s country is an honourable thing, but family is also important. The NYSC has made provisions for married women, pregnant and nursing mothers, to make their service year more enjoyable.

All you need to do is get the right documents ready and fulfil all the requirements.
