Stroke is a disease that upsets the blood vessel that supplies oxygen to the brain.
When this disturbance sets in, the brain does not receive enough oxygen for it to function well, thus causing untold damage. This medical condition sometimes leads to disability or even death.
Instead of waiting to receive a cure for stroke, we want to prevent it. Stroke can be prevented by fixing the underlying cause of it.
• Daily exercise
• Abstaining from smoking
• Feeding on a healthy diet
• Avoid too much alcohol
• Drink moderately
• Reduce stress and anxiety
• Treat diabetes
• Get enough rest
• Avoid taking blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin
• Vegetables
• Fruits
• Nuts
• Legumes
• Grains
It’s also important to avoid a high intake of salt. There should also be a reduction in the intake of red meat and saturated fat.
In situations where a person didn’t prevent this stroke, there are some symptoms that show that a person has contracted this disease. These include;
• Stiffness of some body parts (arm, leg, face) usually one part of the body
• Confusion in the brain basically affects the person’s understanding and speaking ability.
• Headaches
• Drowsiness/walking struggles
• Sight issues in one or the two eyes
• Changes in heartbeat and breathing
• Difficult in swallowing
• Vomiting
• Seizures. For quick remembering of the symptoms of stroke the acronym “FAST” can be used.
• F-face: does the face drop when the person smiles?
• A-arms: does the person struggle to lift the arm(s)?
• S-speech: does the person battle with words when trying to express him/herself?
• T-time: if the answer to these is yes, then the person should be immediately hospitalized
Depending on how quick or how slow a person is diagnosed with stroke its aftereffect can be either temporary or permanent. Some people after a stroke attack may experience;
• Depression
• Struggles expressing and managing their emotions
• Difficulty in controlling the bladder
• Weakness of the body( on one or both sides of the body)
we will discuss two types of stroke:
• Hemorrhagic stroke
• Ischemic stroke
Hemorrhagic stroke:
This is a medical state in which the blood vessels burst inside the brain. Emotional trauma and high blood pressure (high B.P) are the major causes of this type of stroke. Medications that make the blood thin also increases the risk of having this stroke. Treatment usually is aimed at stopping the bleeding and reducing the pressure around the brain. There are different types of hemorrhagic stroke :
Intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke: this is a stroke that occurs as a result of bleeding inside the brain.
Subarachnoid hemorrhagic stroke:
This type of stroke occurs when there is bleeding between the membranes around the brain and the brain itself.
Ischemic stroke:
This type of stroke occurs due to the arteries becoming narrow or blocked.
After experiencing stroke, getting back to normal can be very difficult. But for one to recover successfully one needs therapies and support systems. These therapies includes:
Reviving can be very hard but not impossible. With the help and support of loved ones, it is possible for a person who has once suffered the hard blow of stroke to revive.
