Transformer oil in Food? What Alloy says about Akara that you did not know., The consumption of fast foods and pastries has become one of the many impulsive collective behaviours equally shared among Nigerians.

Although the idea of it, both locally or internationally made, has been engineered to stand at arms reach for the benefit of consumer and producer, however, the extreme zest to make wholesales and profits has unearthed a rather dark revelation at the sidelines of a workshop in Calabar.

As more food vendors keep surfacing
to Satisfy the peckish wants of Netizens, the adoption of polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCBs), otherwise known as transformer oil, in place of Groundnut oil for making “Akara”, buns, plantain chips, and frying chicken has become prevalent.

Babangida Alloy proffered such to public awareness via news medium, according to him foods prepared with PCBs leave the human at risk of lung Cancers, heart-related disease, and kidney and lung failure.

But as soon as it bridged consciousness they began working to make it extinct.

However, their efforts to remove it from the threshold of Nigeria have somewhat proven futile as the chemical substance can be found everywhere, from a common dumpsite to abandoned power authority compounds.

Alloy further issued warnings to the general public; categorically food vendors that usually mix PCBs with groundnut oil to desist as a jail term was the end game of such act.

He said;

“Jail term awaits those caught using PCBs to fry Akara, chicken and plantain chips at roadside to sell to the public because the oil is toxic and carcinogenic”

“Some food vendors now mix PCBs with groundnut oil to fry Akara and sell to the general public.

“Of course, they may not know how hazardous what they are doing is. This exercise is to sensitize policymakers and everyone about this malaise.
