The DAAD Doctoral Programmes in Germany provides funding of €17,260 for a doctoral project at a state or state-recognised institution of higher education or a non-university research institute in Germany.

To be considered for the DAAD Doctoral Programmes in Germany 2026, you must:

  • Not have graduated any longer than six years before the application deadline
  • If you have already started your doctorate, it also applies that the start of the doctorate should not be longer than 3 years ago.
  • Your application cannot be considered if you have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the application deadline.
  • A Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree of 2nd class upper division level and a Master of Arts/Master of Science degree are required
  • Good German language skills – especially for students taking arts subjects – are usually a requirement for study and research projects in Germany. Exceptions are possible if the project is carried out in English.
  • A prior language course of 4 to 6 months is generally included in the scholarship
