Alex Otti completed his secondary education at Okpuala Ngwa Secondary Technical School and Ngwa High School in Aba, both in Abia. He received the top score in his group during the school certificate exams. He continued his education at the University of Port Harcourt, earning a First-Class honours degree in economics in 1988.

Later, in 1994, he received an MBA from the University of Lagos. The Executive Development Programs of the Columbia Business, Stanford Business, and Wharton Business Schools were among his numerous international courses (University of Pennsylvania).

He also completed an executive program at INSEAD in France’s Fontainebleau. Otti received several honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of his accomplishments, including ones from Babcock University in 2009, the University of Port Harcourt in 2012, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2013.

Career

At Nigerian International Bank, which Citibank New York owns, Otti began his career in banking in 1989. Later, he relocated to Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank, where he worked in the corporate banking and treasury and financial services divisions.

Later, he worked for Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited (Merchant Bankers), where he advanced to the senior manager level. After that, he worked for United Bank for Africa (UBA), where he was responsible for managing the South Division’s corporate banking division.

He joined First Bank of Nigeria, PLC in May 2001, and his sole duty is to help the bank expand its Energy Sector. Later, he was elevated to executive director of commercial banking and then executive director of the south. He was in charge of more than 140 branches in the nation’s South-South and Southeastern geopolitical zones.

He assumed the dual roles of group managing director and CEO of Diamond Bank in March 2011 and oversaw a significant institution transformation.

He extended his contract in March 2014 for three years, but on October 24, 2014, he voluntarily announced his retirement. Uzoma Dozie was then appointed as the new GMD and CEO of the Bank in his place.

Alex Otti is a Nigerian economist, banker, investor, philanthropist, and politician. 2015 saw Otti run as an All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for Nigeria’s Abia State governor.

Otti served as the Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc, a Nigerian retail financial institution, before entering politics. He also contributes to the editorial board of ThisDay newspaper and writes for it.

Every other Monday, he publishes a column called “Outside the Box.” Otti ran for governor of Abia State in the elections on April 18.

The Court of Appeal in Owerri declared him the election’s victor. Still, the Supreme Court of Nigeria overturned the decision and confirmed Okezie Ikpeazu of the People’s Democratic Party as the governor of Abia State.

Political Career

He put his All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) campaign to the test in 2015 when he ran for governor of Nigeria’s Abia State. He ran in 2023 on the Labour Party (LP) platform, and he prevailed. The Labour Party candidate Otti won the Abia State governorship election.

He triumphed over the People’s Democratic Party’s Okey Ahiwe, his main rival. After tensely compiling the results, the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Otti the victor.

Professor Nnenna Oti, the returning officer, reported that Ahiwe received 88,529 votes while Alex Otti received 175 467.
