When growing up, we had so many ridiculous questions in our heads, some we asked our parents, some we asked ourselves while some, we left wondering on our minds. Some times we often get ridiculous answers too but, as of that age, we often take everything our parents told us as the truth.

Asking questions as kids always helped us learn. As kids, we were so intuitive and ready to know what is what and why what is. We disturbed our parents, elders and also most importantly our teachers. We always looked up to our teachers’ answers because they are teachers meant to teach us. And we believed they always know the right answer even if they make mistakes, we don’t care as far as they are our teachers.

One of the questions I remember always asking my parent and teachers is, why is the sky blue? I have gotten so many answers and after a while, I became confused about what the right answer is. As a kid, my parents told me that the sky is blue because they are drops of rain filled in the sky and they are all frozen and the sun lights passing shines on the frozen water which emits the blue light. After seeing some frozen mountains, and see that the ice on most of them is blue, I believed that reason so quickly.

When growing up, I have heard and found out so many reasons why the sky is blue. I have found out the scientific reason, also found out the reason based on Christianity and recently read the reason based on Greek mythology. After learning all this reason, I found out that people make conclusions based on their beliefs. Listed below are the various reasons why the sky is blue.

Reason based on Christianity -Why is the sky blue?

As a Christian, we are thought that the is one supreme being and that supreme being is the almighty God who created the heaven and the earth. Who also sent his son Jesus Christ to die on the cross of calvary to cleans our sins. Christianity believes that God made the heavens and the earth and everything on the earth just by speaking the word. On this bases, Christianity believes that the sky is blue because God made it blue when he created the earth.

Taking a quote from the Bible

Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

What we are seeing here is the blue colour of the water in the sky made by God.

Reason based on the Greek mythology -Why is the sky blue?

When growing up, even till now I so much love the Greek mythology because of all their gods. The Greek mythology says the sky is blue because:

A very long time ago. Athena the daughter of Zeus was born, and Zeus her father blessed her with two boons for when she would come of age.

When Athena was about 15, she was told to think of two things to ask of Zeus. Athena being the goddess of wisdom and war was a selfish girl at that age, not having the wisdom which she has now.

What Athena asked for

  • She asked for a city to be named after her. This city was called Athens
  • She asked that her face should be seen by the whole world everyday of the year, and that’s what we are seeing as the blue sky, Athena’s eyes.

The sky is blue, because we are looking at Athena’s eyes.

Scientific reason -Why is the sky blue?

The scientist has made many research and studies and has also come up with their well-tested theory and the reason why the sky is blue. The simple and short answer to this is that gasses and particles travel in the atmosphere and scatter sunlight is different directions. The blue light is scattered more than others because it travels in shorter and smaller waves, this makes the blue light more visible than all other lights.

If we pass sunlight through a glass prism, the different rays of light are scattered in a different direction. The gasses in the atmosphere moves the blue light more that other colours because the move in smaller and shorter wave length. This is what makes the blue light more visible.

In conclusion, people have different believes and reasons for different things. Try and prove to yourself the one you thing is actually more reasonable for your question. If you have your own belief on why the sky is blue, use the comment box and let us know.
