Since its establishment in 1990, the Volvo Environment Prize has gained a reputation as a highly esteemed environmental award in the scientific community. The recipients of this award come from various fields of environmental and sustainability research and activities.
Every year, the Volvo Environment Prize is given to deserving individuals who have significantly contributed to environmental and sustainability research. The prize includes a hand-crafted diploma, a glass sculpture, and a monetary award of SEK 1.5 million, equivalent to approximately EUR 165,000 or USD 215,000.
The awarding ceremony takes place in Stockholm during the month of November.
The Prize is granted by a non-affiliated organization, with the initial screening and evaluation of candidates being carried out by a Scientific Committee. The final selection of the recipient is made by a Prize Jury consisting of widely recognized scientists from around the world.
About Volvo Environment Prize Foundation
In 1988, the Volvo Environment Prize Foundation was established to recognize exceptional scientific breakthroughs or inventions related to the environment. The Foundation has a Scientific Committee led by Professor Carl Folke, which assesses and reviews the nominees.
The International Prize Jury then evaluates the candidates and recommends the most deserving candidate/s to the Foundation’s board for selection.

Aim And Benefits Of The Prize
- Every year, the Prize includes a meticulously crafted diploma, a glass sculpture, and a monetary prize of SEK 1.5 million (equivalent to approximately EUR 150,000 or USD 160,000). The award ceremony takes place annually in Stockholm during the month of November.
Requirements For Prize Qualification
- Environmental scientists are eligible to apply for the prize. The range of disciplines and activities for which nominations are accepted is extensive and encompasses all fields pertinent to the environment.
- The research conducted by nominees should be scientifically grounded and demonstrate clear impacts beyond their specific discipline.
- The acceptance of self-nominations is not permitted.
