Bad Habits That Can Cause Kidney Failure

We exhibit so many habits that have the potential to damage our kidneys or cause kidney failure. These can be daily, weekly, or monthly habits or even those we always love doing.

The kidney is one of the most important parts of the human body due to its role in regulating and maintaining balance in salt, sugar, and waste levels and helping remove waste. These are among the numerous actions the kidney performs on the human body, which these bad habits hinder, leading to Kidney failure.

Bad habits like excessive intake of salt, sugar, and alcohol, low intake of water, overuse of painkillers and many others always weaken the kidney and make it unable to perform its daily functions in the human body.

Several other bad habits can cause kidney failure by adding too much pressure to the kidney, thereby weakening it. Below is a list of these bad habits.

1. Excessive Intake of Salt

Diets high in sodium shouldn’t always be taken because sodium is the main constituent of salt. They can increase one’s chances of high blood pressure and harm the kidneys.

Always try to reduce your consumption of high-sodium foods for better heart and kidney health. Doing this can also help you fight against high blood pressure.

2. Not Drinking Enough Water

Water has always been rated as one of the substances we consume that helps us stay healthy and fit.

The kidney’s ability to remove waste products from our body is due to the presence of water. When there is insufficient water to help the kidney clear out these waste materials, they accumulate, leading to Kidney stones.

Kidney stones can cause kidney failure because they obstruct urine passage, mounting pressure on the kidney and making it wear out. So, always drink a lot of water to stay fit and reduce your chances of kidney failure.

Thus, it is crucial that alcohol is consumed moderately and that enough water is taken to help you stay hydrated and reduce the effect of alcohol on your body.

4. High Sugar Level or Intake

Although sugar is sweet, it can lead to obesity and Diabetes, which are one of the two main causes of kidney failure. Excessive intake of desserts, candies, and foods high in sugar is necessary to reduce and regulate your body’s sugar level.

5. Eating Processed Foods

Some processed foods have high phosphorus and sodium content, which are not nutritious to the body when present in large quantities. They also contain a high amount of added sugar and unhealthy fats and can cause an imbalance in the body’s acid-base level.

Some processed and packaged foods can cause kidney inflammation and many other health problems to the kidney, which can lead to kidney failure.

6. Smoking

Smoking is one of the bad habits that can cause kidney failure, which some individuals always indulge in. It has the potential to cause harm to the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys, and I know you’ll be surprised that it also affects the kidneys.

Smoke contains deadly and toxic materials which can be seen in the human blood immediately after it is inhaled, and this smoke contained in the blood can damage the blood vessels, including that of the kidney.

7. Not getting enough sleep and rest

Rest and sleep are crucial in our daily lives and should not be toyed with. They refresh and energize our bodies to work effectively, and when you do not get enough rest and sleep, it affects the whole body, including the kidneys.

Depriving our body of sleep and rest can cause kidney failure because it will be too weak to work and will be overloaded.

8. Overuse of Painkillers

Consuming large quantities of painkillers or over-the-counter pain medications like NSAIDs and Analgesics can relieve your pain, but it harms your kidney and can cause kidney failure if taken excessively over a long period.

Your kidney demands intensive care because it is one of the parts of the body that performs a crucial function in keeping the body healthy. Therefore, it is necessary to stop every bad habit that can cause kidney failure and harm in any other way.

Always remember that when you take care of your kidney, it will also take care of you.
