The University of Birmingham, located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK, is a public research institution that was established in 1900, taking over from Queen’s College, Birmingham (which was founded in 1828 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery) and Mason Science College (established in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason). It was the first English university of its kind to receive its own royal charter, making it a notable civic or ‘red brick’ university.
