The Slang “Mad o”

Happy moments make the most memorable part of life, especially occasions like birthdays and weddings, amongst others. But what if you hear a certain slang you aren’t familiar with at such an unforgettable event?

Slang has become a known way to express oneself in society, especially in this current generation – Gen Z and Gen Alpha– currently dominating the world. You either adjust to the trend of words or risk having FOMO( fear of missing out).

Adjusting to certain slang trends can make you better communicate with peers and people around you. ‘Mad o’ slang cuts across several meanings which you may not know.

‘Mad o’ is a popular Nigerian slang originating from the streets of Lagos. This slang is popularly used to express shock, surprise or astonishment, although it might sometimes be dynamic. It can also be used as a sarcastic remark to a statement, and it can also be used when tired or bored of a conversation.

As dramatic as it might sound, it still sticks more to the memory than most vocabularies ever will as it can be said with a sense of humour like, “Mad oo! Dollar is rising again”. This shows surprise and carries a hint of sarcasm, as the outcome of the rise would have an effect on the economy indirectly.

Each generation’s slang helps you understand what is unique to them and how they communicate effectively. Getting a little knowledge of that wouldn’t be bad.
