Tips to Secure Your Bank Account – Access Bank provides Customers with Tips on How to Secure Bank Accounts.

Access Bank, a prominent banking institution, is alerting its customers about the latest fraudulent schemes devised by scammers. Rather than targeting mobile devices, the focus of these fraudsters is on obtaining access to individuals’ SIM cards. In response to this threat, Access Bank has advised all customers to secure their SIM cards with a password as an additional security measure to safeguard their accounts.

Access Bank conveyed this important message on Wednesday, June 14, 2023. In this blog, we will share general tips to assist you in protecting your account from such fraudulent activities.

General Security Tips

  1. Safely store your financial documents, credit cards, passwords, and tokens in a secure location.
  2. Avoid sending personal or sensitive information through email, as it is typically an insecure channel.
  3. Immediately report lost or stolen checks and debit/credit cards to your bank.
  4. When choosing a Personal Identification Number (PIN), avoid using easily guessable information like your name, birth date, or phone number.
  5. Use secure websites for online shopping, ensuring they display a closed lock icon and “https://…” in the address bar.
  6. Exercise caution when opening email attachments or clicking links in unsolicited or suspicious-looking emails.
  7. Be mindful of oversharing personal information on social media platforms, as fraudsters could use it.
  8. Review the privacy options of your social media accounts to limit the amount of information shared.
  9. Avoid storing passwords or sensitive information on easily accessible devices or locations.
  10. Always log off from platforms where you sign in rather than simply closing the browser.
  11. Be cautious about sharing your account details, as they can be used for unauthorized transactions.
  12. Maintain confidentiality with your Internet banking and card details.
  13. Regularly monitor your accounts for any unusual activity.
  14. Be aware that Access Bank will never send you a link in an email to provide your login details or request card information through a phone call.
  15. End phone calls immediately if the caller requests confidential information, as fraudsters may impersonate companies or the bank.
  16. Report any suspicious behaviour or activities to frauddesk@accessbankplc.com or antifraudunit@accessbankplc.com.

Documents Disposal

  1. Always utilize a shredding machine to dispose of unwanted documents securely. Improper disposal can lead to the exposure of sensitive information to the public or potential fraudsters.
  2. Remember that torn documents can be reassembled, potentially revealing confidential information to unauthorized individuals.
  3. Refrain from disclosing customers’ information to third parties, including staff members who do not require access to that information.
  4. Please recognize that you can access customer and bank information, and handling it responsibly and ethically is important.
  5. Safeguard the confidentiality of the information you encounter, as it is meant to benefit the bank and its customers.
  6. When you receive a new debit or credit card, ensure the old card is cut up and discarded.
  7. If you cannot access a shredding machine, request one from the appropriate authorities.

Scam Mail Fraud

  • Did you receive an email requesting your token, PIN, or Internet banking details?
  • Do not respond to the mail, as Access Bank will not ask you for such confidential information.
  • Instead, forward the mail to our contact centre email address contactcenter@accessbankplc.com

Security Consciousness

  1. Verify your account balance from an ATM or bank when you receive a credit alert before proceeding with any transactions or releasing goods.
  2. Exercise caution and avoid responding to emails that request your personal details, such as account number, card details, token, PIN, etc.
  3. Remember that Access Bank will never ask for such personal information through email or phone.
