These scholarships enable individuals to pursue the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and the Master of Law (LLM) through distance learning at the University of London. Candidates have the flexibility to begin at any level and are not required to complete the entire program.

For instance, they can commence at the Postgraduate Certificate level and progress towards the LLM or conclude their studies after obtaining the PG Certificate. Those who have already obtained an undergraduate degree can directly start at the LLM level, bypassing the PG Certificate and Diploma.

About Canon Collins

The British Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa (BDAF) established the Educational Trust for Southern Africa in 1981. This initiative was primarily led by Ethel de Keyser, the director of BDAF, and Canon John Collins, the founder of BDAF.

Following Canon Collins’ death, the trust changed its name and became the Canon Collins Educational Trust for Southern Africa.

The University of London generously provides these scholarships, covering full tuition and examination entry fees for chosen candidates. However, it’s important to note that local examination fees are not included in the scholarship.

Requirements For Scholarships Qualification

To qualify for the scholarship, individuals must be accepted into the University of London’s Master of Laws program through distance learning. The following criteria apply to applicants seeking this scholarship:

  • They must be a citizen or hold refugee status in one of the following countries: Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
  • They should be regular residents in one of these countries.
  • They must possess the required qualifications for admission to the program.
  • They should currently be employed in either full-time or part-time work.
  • They must be able to dedicate a minimum of 10 hours per week to their studies.

How To Apply

Applications are currently being accepted via our online form. The application deadline is August 23rd, 2023. All applicants must provide the following supporting documents:

  1. Valid identification document (acceptable options: passport, birth certificate, driver’s license)
  2. Academic transcripts (only for LLM applicants)
  3. Degree certificates (only for LLM applicants) or school/other certificates
  4. Two reference letters from referees
  5. Copies of your two most recent payslips.

For the best chance of success, it is recommended that you submit an academic reference and a reference from an employer. However, if you are applying for the PG Certificate level and have not attended university, you may provide two work references instead.

It is important to request the referees to write a reference specifically related to your application for this award, highlighting how you meet the selection criteria. The reference should emphasize your strengths as an applicant, demonstrate your ability to study at the required level and identify your potential impact in the future.

Please ensure that your application is complete and accurate before submitting it online. All sections of the form must be filled out before the system will allow submission. You can save your progress and edit the application form until you are ready to submit it.

The application deadline is 16:00 (GMT) / 17:00 (SAST) on August 23rd, 2023. Late applications will not be considered. Kindly refrain from emailing us for updates on your application status.
