If you are a self-funded international student from an African Union member state and planning to pursue postgraduate studies, you may qualify for a scholarship worth £4,500. This scholarship will be a discount on your first year’s tuition fee.

Scholarship recipients will be selected based on their academic performance in their undergraduate degrees. Therefore, all applications for eligible courses will be automatically considered for the scholarship.

Aim And Benefits Of Scholarship

A deduction of £4,000 will be applied to your tuition fee.

Requirements Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible for the University of Essex Scholarships for Africans, you are required to satisfy all of the following criteria:

  • These scholarships are specifically for students paying international tuition fees and funding their studies independently.
  • Students must be residents of a member state of the African Union according to the definition of ordinary residence.
  • These scholarships can be awarded to applicants who have completed relevant studies in specified countries.
  • Applicants must have obtained an undergraduate degree (including integrated Masters degrees) with a specified grade or higher. A higher grade in a Master’s degree cannot compensate for a lower grade in a bachelor’s degree.
  • The scholarships are available for full-time taught Master’s courses leading to MA, MSc, MRES, and LLM degrees starting in October 2023 or January 2024.
  • Applicants who have accepted an offer of a place by July 14, 2023 (for October 2023 start) or October 13, 2023 (for January 2024 start) and have met the academic entry requirements will be considered for these scholarships.
  • Each student can only receive one scholarship, which cannot be combined with any other scholarships offered by the University of Essex.
  • This scholarship is applicable for the first year of Master’s study at Essex only.
  • Recipients of the scholarship may be required to participate in promotional activities.

Note: Students using a loan that needs to be repaid to finance their studies will be regarded as self-funded.

Country-Specific Requirements:

  • In Ghana, a minimum academic achievement of a second-class upper-division degree with a CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 or higher is required.
  • In Nigeria, a minimum academic achievement of a CGPA of 3 out of 5 or higher is required.
  • Other countries within the African Union require a minimum academic achievement of 2:1 or higher (or an equivalent qualification as determined by our Postgraduate Admissions selection criteria).

If you are interested and meet the qualifications, you can apply to the University of Essex by visiting their website at www.essex.ac.uk. Once you meet all the eligibility requirements, you will be automatically considered for this award. There is no need to fill out an application form separately.

The university will assess your eligibility based on the country you reside in and the fee status you provide in your application for admission to Essex.
